Terms
Like many professions, energy healers have a language of their own. Here are a few helpful terms you will see used throughout this course.
Attuned: one who has been initiated by a Reiki Master to connect with Reiki as a Practitioner.
Attunement: the process by which one is initiated and empowered with the ability to channel Reiki for healing and helping others.
Chakra: one of several rotating wheels of energy located in the energy body.
Client: this term may be used interchangeably with ‘receiver,’ and ‘recipient.’ It is the person to whom Reiki is channelled by the Practitioner.
reiki (note the lower case “r”): divinely guided Life Force energy or Intuitively Guided Life Force energy. One does not have to be attuned to Reiki in order to access this subtle energy.
Reiki (upper case “R”): The practice of Reiki during which a Practitioner channels reiki to a client.
Legal information
Before we begin your journey into the wonderful world of Reiki, you should be aware of a few legal issues.
If you plan to practice Reiki as a profession, you may encounter some minor legal opposition. In some states, Reiki Practitioners are required to be licensed massage therapists if they wish to practice professionally. You can call the Massage Board in your state to learn your state’s requirements.
One workaround to the massage therapist regulation may be to become an ordained minister. If you are practicing your spiritual or religious beliefs and live in the United States of America, you are protected by The Constitution. For many Practitioners, Reiki tends to be spiritual in nature, so you may be drawn to becoming ordained. If not, you may consider offering your services on a donation basis. If you do not have a set fee for your professional services, you should be safe from any legal improprieties. Start by contacting the Massage Board in your area to be sure.
For information about becoming an ordained minister, contact the Universal Light Church (TUL) at www.theuniversallight.com. TUL is nondenominational and registers people as Healing Ministers. If you feel that you are led to practice and teach Reiki, then ordination may prove beneficial.
You should also know that is it illegal to diagnose, prescribe, recommend, advise. These acts are reserved for medical doctors and clinicians. Reiki Practitioners and energy healers are not in the business of identifying or curing disease. To be a good energy healer, you do not need to know what ails your client, or which drug or herb is right for their malady. If you have the training, it is perfectly legal to teach someone how to stay healthy. If you are led to teach Reiki, you will have no problems as long as you do not attempt to diagnose or “cure” diseases. Stay in your lane.
