Kujichagulia: self-determination

Kujichagulia means self-determination. It's one of Dr. Karenga's Seven Principles of Kwanzaa that we are encouraged to maintain throughout the year. We're reminded to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves instead of allowing others to define, name, create and speak for us. This is important as a community and as individuals. Know who you are and know what is true for you. Build an existence that resonates with your deepest beliefs and do not allow the dominant culture to shame you or shake you loose. Empower and permit yourself to shift your paradigm to accommodate the acquisition of new information. This is your God-given birthright and responsibility to humanity.
